The Confederate flag (center) was adopted September, 1861, after General Beauregard decided that a new flag was needed in the Battle of Manassas, July, 21, 1861 , to be less confusing than the Stars and Bars; or the First National Flag of the Confederacy, which resembled the U. S. Flag (Union ) in the dust, smoke, and heat of battle. (A vintage card, dated 1965)
