Vidalia Onions “Sweet Georgia Taste”- The Vidalia Onion is a Georgia-grown yellow granex hybrid known for its sweet, mild flavor. The industry’s annual harvest brings some $ 50 million into Georgia’s economy. Vidalia onions are harvested from late April through to mid-June. In 1990, Georgia Legislature declared the Vidalia onion as the official state vegetable. Approximately 275 growers cultivate Vidalia onions on over 10,000 acres.

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, Marietta, Georgia

The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain

Union troops under Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman attacked Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's entrenched Confederates along the Kennesaw Mountain line on the morning of June 27, 1864. There were over 4,000 casualties at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. The 2,922 acre Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park commemorates the sacrifices of those who fought and those who died in the four month Atlanta campaign during the summer of 1864.

Back view of the Chief Vann House in Chatsworth, Georgia. During the early 1800’s James Vann and his son Joseph became Cherokee political leaders and wealthy businessmen. They established one of the largest and most prosperous plantations in the Cherokee Nation. Today the beautiful brick mansion survives as one of Georgia’s best preserved and most original Cherokee Indian homes.

3 eggs

2/3 cup sugar

1 cup dark corn syrup

1/3 cup melted butter or margarine

1 cup pecan halves

1 9-inch unbaked pastry shell
oven 350 degrees F

Beat eggs thoroughly with sugar, dash of salt, corn syrup and melted butter- add pecans. Pour into unbaked pastry shell. Bake in moderate oven, 50 minutes or till knife inserted halfway between outside and center of filling comes out clean. Cool.

1 egg, beaten

1 cup buttermilk

1 cup self-rising flour

½ cup cornmeal

½ tsp salt

6-8 green tomatoes, cut into ¼ “ slices

bacon drippings or vegetable oil

 Mix egg and buttermilk in a shallow dish. Working in batches, dip tomato slices into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip back into the dish. Coat with flour mixture. Fry in hot oil (375°) in a large, heavy skillet until browned, turning once with tongs. Transfer to drain.

Yield: 6 servings.

Thank you very much Nikki! Yes, map cards are my absolute No.1.

 For blog visitors: the shadow on the Georgia map is not a scarecrow (like Nikki says it looks, and I agree), just  a fisherman in a straw hat. :-). Also just yesterday I received the Iowa map of the same series of cards. It can be seen in the Direct swap with Iowa post.
